Mainz, Germany
Gutenberg’s printing press. Gutenberg was more of a business man than a religious one. He printed the Bible since knew there would be demand. At the time, I took three years to print one Bible by hand but with Gutenberg’s press, he could do 180 in the same amount of time. In the heart of a wine region, he converted a wine press into the printing press. He quickly switched from parchment to paper and would acquire his paper from Italy.
Pictures include:
One of the early Bibles printed on the press.
Atlas from before America was “discovered”
Stumbling rocks (Markers placed in front of homes of Jewish people who lost their lives in concentration camps. A recent symbol of remembrance, but are sometimes a source or controversy.)
A church bombed in WWII (most of the city was destroyed and has been rebuilt.)
Old town
The main cathedral, baroque style
Fun fact- We tried Riesling soup. It was delicious. Also, Snow White is based off a true family in Mainz.
